2011 - Year of the Rabbit

I have just discovered I was born in the Year of the Rabbit but from the description below - I don't think that's me.

People born in the Year of the Rabbit are articulate, talented, and ambitious. They are virtuous, reserved, and have excellent taste. Rabbit people are admired, trusted, and are often financially lucky. They are fond of gossip but are tactful and generally kind. Rabbit people seldom lose their temper. They are clever at business and being conscientious, never back out of a contract. They would make good gamblers for they have the uncanny gift of choosing the right thing. However, they seldom gamble, as they are conservative and wise. They are most compatible with those born in the years of the Sheep, Pig, and Dog.

ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY - Surrender

This is my submission for this weeks Illustration Friday topic/subject, Surrender - a picture of Paul Weller.

What has Paul Weller got to do with 'surrender' I hear you ask?

Paul Weller used to be in a 3 piece combo called The Jam during the late 70's, early 80's & they had another number one hit with their final song released in November 1982, The Beat Surrender (which you can listen to with the attached YouTube video below)

I have also included a small animation which I did while at the University of Abertay.

Camel-lot

One hump or two?

What d'ya call a camel with 3 humps?

 

I wouldn't say it's been an obsession but have been trying to draw a camel for some strange reason.

As I was sketching out a few ideas I drew this & that old joke about what do you call a camel with three lumps on it's back? Humphrey, well here he is in all his glory, ladies & gentlemen let me introduce Humphrey, hope you like him.

Oh Christmas Tree

O Christmas Tree is a traditional German Christmas Carol. The author of the lyrics is unknown as is the composer of the lyrics. The tradition of bringing a tree inside at Christmas and decorating it with candy, baubles and bells was started in the nineteenth century and is immortalized in the carol O Christmas Tree lyrics.

Reindeer

Methinks that I owe some inspirational credit to Japanese graphic artist Akinri Oishi who was at NEoN 10 a seven-day international digital arts festival here in Dundee.

I thought I'd be "sneaky" & try to get a last minute illustration done for Illustration Friday.

Today I realized that I should keep the day job and give up the idea of ever being a “street artist”. I haven’t quite got the nerve to do it, although trying to do it in broad daylight and on quite a busy street surely isn’t the way to go about it.

My idea was to put stickers on to these funny looking objects protruding from the wall on Victoria Road. I had walked passed them for months and had what I thought was a fantastic idea. There are 12 of these things and I thought “Hmm, the 12 disciples…”

So one sunny morning on my way to Uni, armed with my pre drawn and pre cut stickers I went about my business. Standing there nervously as traffic whizzed past, I nervously tried to peel the backing from my stickers (I knew I shouldn’t have cut my nails the night before), too afraid to use my scalpel incase “lifted” by the polis for having a dangerous weapon in my possession.

Although the sun was shining, it was blowing a gale, so it proved most difficult to stick my stickers, as they weren’t sticky enough and kept blowing away. Again thoughts of the police reprimanding me for litter louting entered my head as I tried picking up all my discarded bits as they flew about all around me. My heart did sink into my belly when a police car roared past sirens blaring and I had visions of the Tully “47 year old man arrested for Graffiti/Vandalism”. Probably chasing some real graffiti artists!

Anyway I managed to get 4 done before I cowardly gave up and planned to go back at a later date but so far have not done so. I should, because when I went home I explained what I’d been up to my partner and a friend, my partner laughed and shook her head in disbelief while the friend got all excited and animated having seen these images from the bus and how much it made him laugh.

Time has passed and I haven’t tried it again, but now, everytime I walk past the site I have 2 faces and one eye staring at me reminding me of my failure.

Today I visited the Illustration Friday's website and the attached flash animation (quickly drafted) is my entry for this weeks word/subject/topic.

Elephant Parade London 2010

I did this little animation yesterday afternoon after being inspired by illustrator Rebecca Sutherland's painted elephant. She was asked to design & paint a life-sized baby elephant to help raise funds for the Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS). Rebecca's elephant will take part in The Elephant Parade London 2010, if you can't make it then visit her blog & see her work process there (it's very interesting).

Wrestling Heaven

I've adapted my "Who's the Daddy" illustration to include Shirley Crabtree's arch rival - Martin Ruane, (who?) better known to you grappling fans as Giant Haystacks. Both men sadly no longer with us, but I like to think that they are constantly here - when everytime you hear thunder it's either Big Daddy doing his favourite move - "the Belly Splash" or Giant Haystacks attacking Big D with his "Running Elbow Drop"

Whitespace Solutions @ Abertay, Dundee

It's been a bit of a productive day with the old "thing-gummy-bob" blog! this is my 3rd posting today with yet more to come (mebbe).

This is a wee animation I did at Uni that I thought I'd share with you. It was done a while back for Whitespace Solutions @ Abertay, Dundee - not to be confused by Whitespace, that great design agency in Edinburgh.
