My first instinct when I saw Friday's subject/topic was to illustrate a picture of Lana Turner, who some of you may remember was one of the first Sweater Girl pin-ups.

But instead I have drawn a golfer. Golfers, as all of you are aware have a bad taste in clothing especially sweaters - in fact I think it is a necessity to have a terrible wardrobe full of repulsive jumpers & plus fours. So for my Illustration Friday I have tried to capture this in my effort.

Getting your hands dirty

I still haven't got the paints out or dug up the spuds for a spot of tattie printing unlike illustrator Rebecca Sutherland (mentioned in the post before/after this?) who has beaten me to it. I have to admit I am spending more & more time in front of this 'darn computer', & feel the need to get back to basics.

What I have done tho' is trawl through my sketchbooks & come across some earlier work (circa 1989) - OMG!! Hope you like.

Potato/Tattie Printing

What a coincidence! I had been thinking about getting my hands dirty & getting the paints out, cleaning a few spuds up for a spot of "tattie printing". When, there I was "tweetin" with illustrator Rebecca Sutherland about potato prints & how she was doing a job for a client using this technique.

I haven't managed to get the paints out yet & I might not now that I have seen Rebecca's fantastic effort. I can only imagine what the final outcome is.

Paul Weller used to be in a 3 piece combo called The Jam during the late 70's, early 80's & they had another number one hit with their final song released in November 1982, The Beat Surrender (which you can listen to with the attached YouTube video below)

All I Want For Christmas

Here is my submission for the "All I Want For Christmas Cards" project. Unfortunately it didn't make the shortlist but you can view/buy the 20 card designs that did make the collection here.

The All I want for Christmas cards project is an annual festive project in support of the Bristol based charity “Young Bristol”. Now into its second collection the project brings together 20 illustrators from around the country whose specific works for the project have been used to create a limited edition collection of Christmas cards that will be sold as packs containing each of the 20 cards.

Artists involved in Collection 2 include Robert Del Naja (3D of Massive Attack), Simon Spilsbury, Rob Ryan, Melbs, Aaron Miller, Wayne Harris and a whole host of others.

Had a great day sledging with my son Harvey & some friends last Sunday. We flew done the hill on our 'pink' sled. The snow was fresh & crisp, continually falling between the thunder & lightning. Then it was home for some home-made tomato soup - absolutely fab day :-)

My twEATs competition submission

This was my submission for the Central Station recently held twEATs competition.

They put out a call to artists, foodies and creatives to submit illustrated recipes to be featured in a proposed book/newspaper/publication encouraging people to cook with locally grown produce.

Unfortunately my entry wasn't picked as the winner, that accolade goes to Hilary Grant, another Dundee based illustrator (such a talented city!), so congrats & well done to Hilary!

The twEATs event itself is live, where Tim Maddam, Head Chef at River Cottage Axminster Canteen and Deli is going to be revealing a recipe, step by step on Twitter with people in their homes following the instructions of a yet to be revealed secret (vegetarian) recipe on the 16th of August as part of Glasgow's Harvest Festival.

My Abertay Digital Showcase 2010

Well, well, well, that's it finally over, 2 years at University!! It all ended with my end of year show which I am about to go into in great detail, so pull up a chair and make yourself comfy cos believe me you'll be here for a while (only kiddin'!).

For my final year project I wanted to explore the use of character design in conjunction with new technology and see whether it could help in the fight against bullying.

The development of my character Michty Mo - Playground Protector was updated on a regular basis (hah!) on it's own blog post www.michtymo.blogspot.com where you can find out more about the character & project.

Through research for my dissertation I found that children were reluctant to tell an adult/parent/teacher if they were victims of this dreadful activity. So by researching the use of spokes - character design in advertising past & present I wanted to find out if I could use some of these techniques in creating a sympathetic character that children could relate to & trust enough to open up talk about any bullying issues.
It was my intention to create a youth club environment online and using Facebook & Twitter to create a type of social networking group as a possible means of interactivity using the character as a host . The idea of members having to enrol, where they could have access to online material, monthly newsletter updates, downloadable freebies, games etc, hopefully creating an online community where members could relate their own advice from their own experiences. The idea of an identity e.g. badges and stickers could be introduced & distributed to members as a means of recognition to other members to create a sense of belonging which would ultimately encourage self-confidence and the feeling that they are not alone and it is not just them that this vile activity is happening to.
As a way of introducing the character to the targeted age group I created this short animation below -

as well as the animated piece I created a printed comic to sit alongside it to further promote the character. The response from the public during the time of the exhibition was very helpful & the amount of people that confessed to being victims or having knowledge of someone else being bullied was quite alarming.

I'm not saying that the creation of this character will eradicate bullying but I am hoping that it could be used in conjunction with other anti bullying iniatives and help alleviate the despair & loneliness victims of this social disease feel.

Kid on "Banksy"

Today I realized that I should keep the day job and give up the idea of ever being a “street artist”. I haven’t quite got the nerve to do it, although trying to do it in broad daylight and on quite a busy street surely isn’t the way to go about it.

My idea was to put stickers on to these funny looking objects protruding from the wall on Victoria Road. I had walked passed them for months and had what I thought was a fantastic idea. There are 12 of these things and I thought “Hmm, the 12 disciples…”

So one sunny morning on my way to Uni, armed with my pre drawn and pre cut stickers I went about my business. Standing there nervously as traffic whizzed past, I nervously tried to peel the backing from my stickers (I knew I shouldn’t have cut my nails the night before), too afraid to use my scalpel incase “lifted” by the polis for having a dangerous weapon in my possession.

Although the sun was shining, it was blowing a gale, so it proved most difficult to stick my stickers, as they weren’t sticky enough and kept blowing away. Again thoughts of the police reprimanding me for litter louting entered my head as I tried picking up all my discarded bits as they flew about all around me. My heart did sink into my belly when a police car roared past sirens blaring and I had visions of the Tully “47 year old man arrested for Graffiti/Vandalism”. Probably chasing some real graffiti artists!

Anyway I managed to get 4 done before I cowardly gave up and planned to go back at a later date but so far have not done so. I should, because when I went home I explained what I’d been up to my partner and a friend, my partner laughed and shook her head in disbelief while the friend got all excited and animated having seen these images from the bus and how much it made him laugh.

Time has passed and I haven’t tried it again, but now, everytime I walk past the site I have 2 faces and one eye staring at me reminding me of my failure.

Elephant Parade London 2010

I did this little animation yesterday afternoon after being inspired by illustrator Rebecca Sutherland's painted elephant. She was asked to design & paint a life-sized baby elephant to help raise funds for the Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS). Rebecca's elephant will take part in The Elephant Parade London 2010, if you can't make it then visit her blog & see her work process there (it's very interesting).

I've adapted my "Who's the Daddy" illustration to include Shirley Crabtree's arch rival - Martin Ruane, (who?) better known to you grappling fans as Giant Haystacks. Both men sadly no longer with us, but I like to think that they are constantly here - when everytime you hear thunder it's either Big Daddy doing his favourite move - "the Belly Splash" or Giant Haystacks attacking Big D with his "Running Elbow Drop"

The character is supposed to be a bad northern comic who swears a lot, at the moment you can't tell as there's no audio, but I am trying to overcome that problem. Rubberband Ball 2

Well on Friday I threw down the gauntlet to my son Harvey & told him that I too was making a rubberband ball. His face was a picture when I showed him what I had done, (picture from previous post can be found here http://tartanbaffies.blogspot.com/2010/01/rubber-band-ball.html)

The contest hotted up yesterday when we decided to go swimming, walking up to the bus stop we saw the pavement littered with red elastic bands (slight exaggeration!) & the fight began as to who could collect the most - well, I picked up 32 & Harv found 22 (so he said, I'm not so sure). Anyway mines is biggest so far & weighs in at 31gms compared to Harvey's 26gms.

Rubber Band Ball

Today I started a Rubberband ball as I walked to Uni, above is this mornings effort. I know it doesn't look like much but over the next few day I will post each walks contribution to my rubberband ball.

I'm in competition with my son, he doesn't know it just yet - he started one yesterday.

So tonight I will surprise him with this & throw the gauntlet down.

This morning I found I changed my route to maximise my findings. I even got hacked off with myself when I saw a rubberband next to where someone was standing & I didn't go & get it - mebbe it will be there when I do the return journey.

This may turn into an obsession!!!

A while back I put in a proposal for a short animation for the Glasgow Film Theatre trailer competition organised by http://www.thisiscentralstation.com/ . Unfortunately it didn't make the shortlist.

My proposal for the GFT trailer & sting was to be a keystone cops with a hint of Benny Hill chase through the streets of Glasgow. It was to be a mixture of maybe live action shots of Glasgow streets with animated film stars being chased by the paparazzi. If that wasn't possible then I would have the animated characters running through a collage of glasgow scenes with them hiding in the GFT watching a movie with the logo & sponsorship coming up on the screen as an intro.

I put together a small flash movie (see above) with a taste of what I had in mind for the characters. John Wayne would be on a horse, the thought of Humphrey Bogart & Katherine Hepburn coming up the Clyde on the African Queen came to mind, with Leo Di Capprio & Kate Winslett in a life raft/ice berg with penguins looking on. I would incorporate a mixture of Hollywood of old & the latest stars of today.

The other idea would be to produce a hollywood style red carpet parade of stars entering the cinema with lots of photographers & flash lights going off, crowds of fans cheering. With the cinema getting fuller, showing it bulging, then exploding with lots of shooting stars coming at you with the GFT logo & details.

Thought I would show this off, this was a style of illustration I was doing before computers took over my life - I still get the coloured sheets of paper out occasionally along with the ozone friendly spraymount & attempt the odd masterpiece!!.

Robot Power

Everywhere you go on the web there are pictures of robots, they seem to be a popular subject for illustrating - so I have decided to add my own (forgetting that there is already a robot on my blog somewhere!).
These 2 were done a few years back, but I have uploaded them here to show you 2 different styles but having some similarities.
The robot(L) was created using pieces of my son's toys - plastic pliers, motorbike frames & a computer mouse, then creating a montage background with found photographs/images.
The robot(R) is a simplified drawn image of robot(L) and placed in a similar drawn background.
Both of these illustrations have a certain charm about them. In fact I am using the robot (R) in an animation that I hope to have uploaded here at some point - so stay tuned as they say!
